Front and rear tyres
The front tyre steers and brakes, while the rear one transmits the drive, so their construction and tread pattern differ. A front tyre is used only at the front and a rear tyre only at the rear, unless the tyre is specifically designed for both positions. Do not mix radial and bias tyres unless the motorcycle or tyre manufacturer approves it – the owner's manual tells you which construction suits your bike. The letters R, B and D are explained in our article on tyre construction.
Sidewall markings
- TL and TT – a TL (tubeless) tyre is fitted to a tubeless rim without an inner tube, while a TT (tube type) tyre needs an inner tube of the correct size. An inner tube is required if either the tyre or the rim is marked TT.
- Direction arrow – on many motorcycle tyres an arrow on the sidewall shows which way the tyre must roll; always fit the tyre according to the arrow.
- Load and speed index – at least the values the motorcycle manufacturer specifies.
- DOT code – the last four digits show the week and year of manufacture; see our article on tyre age.
Running in and tread depth
Our recommendation: a new tyre still has a thin, slippery film from manufacturing, so grip is lower at first. Ride at least the first 100 km gently – with moderate lean angles and smooth acceleration and braking – and keep the pressure at the manufacturer's recommended level.
Legal requirement: in Estonia, motorcycle tyres must have a remaining tread depth of at least 1.0 mm.
Why this page opens with 120/70 R17
The category opens with the front tyre size 120/70 R17 as an example.
