225/45 R17 sports car tyres
A sports car tyre has to cope with high speeds and give precise handling, so besides the size it pays to check the speed index, homologation and rim protection. This page opens with 225/45 R17 as an example; select your own size in the “Tyre size” filter. Read the guide

Speed index and the ZR marking
We recommend choosing at least the speed index the vehicle manufacturer specifies: W, for example, means up to 270 km/h and Y up to 300 km/h. ZR in the size (e.g. 225/45 ZR17) shows that the tyre is designed for speeds above 240 km/h; the exact limit is given by the speed index after the size. The letters R, ZR, B and D are explained in our article on tyre construction.
Homologation, rim protection and load
- Homologation – markings such as MO, AO, N0 or ★ show that the tyre was developed and approved together with a specific car manufacturer. If your car calls for such a tyre, you will find it with the “Homologation” filter.
- Rim protection – a rubber ridge on the sidewall (e.g. FR) protects the edge of an alloy wheel from kerb scuffs; the “Rim Protection” filter shows such tyres.
- Load index – at least the value the manufacturer specifies, with an XL tyre where required.
Summer tyres and the cold
A sporty summer tyre uses a compound that is harder than a winter tyre's and grips best on a warm road – according to tyre manufacturers, above about +7 °C. In cooler weather grip drops and braking distances grow, so fit summer tyres only once the weather is consistently warm, and swap them for winter tyres in good time in autumn.
Why this page opens with 225/45 R17
The category opens with 225/45 R17 as an example. Some sporty cars use different sizes front and rear – the tyres then cannot be swapped between axles. Choose your size in the “Tyre size” filter; for different front and rear sizes, use the “Need different front and rear sizes?” option in the same filter. The “By vehicle” search on the home page shows the sizes that fit your car.
