What to check when choosing car tyres
- Size – use a size approved by the vehicle manufacturer. The tyre must match the rim, and the wheel must turn freely in the wheel arch.
- Load index – at least the value the vehicle manufacturer specifies; if the car requires reinforced tyres, choose tyres marked XL. See our article on load index.
- Speed index – we recommend choosing at least the index the vehicle manufacturer specifies.
- Run-flat – if the car came with run-flat tyres (RFT) from the factory and has no spare wheel, we recommend choosing run-flat tyres again. Read more in our article on run-flat tyres.
Season and a matching set
In Estonia, passenger cars must use winter tyres from 1 December to 1 March; for the rest of the year you can drive on summer tyres. Tyres on the same axle must have the same tread type, and we recommend fitting four identical tyres so that the car behaves predictably. If you replace only two, fit the newer ones on the rear axle – this keeps the car more stable on wet roads.
The DOT code shows when a tyre was made; why this matters is explained in our article on tyre age.
